STEVE BUNKHALL

Steve Bunkhall: On the Track

Originally trained as a chemist, Steve Bunkhall has a PhD from Cambridge University and worked for a number of years research before deciding to do something completely different for a while. That was in 1988...

Fortuitously 1988 was about the time when data-acquisition and computer modelling was starting to become in more widely accessible in motorsport and he joined Lola to manage instrumentation and wind-tunnel projects working on applications in F-1, Champcar, F-3000 and the stunning GroupC sportscars.

From 1993 he worked as freelance engineer with factory and private teams, first specialising in data-analysis and modelling and then moving on to take the role of technical director with several successful sportscar teams.

Cars he has been responsible for have won European and British titles, including back to back LMS titles with JMW, and the Spa 24. A passionate endurance racer he is still chasing elusive wins at Daytona and Le Mans despite several close calls.

As leader of the UK Government backed Energy Efficient Motorsport (EEMS) program from 2004-2007 he developed an interest in the environmental impact of motorsport that continues. He believes that the competitive nature and high profile of motorsport can be harnessed to speed development of new environmentally friendly automotive technologies.

One an enthusiastic participant in the brutal sport that is British Sunday League Soccer, he now escapes by heading for the remoter parts of North West Scotland.
